Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
Starring Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead in the lead roles, this movie managed to cram together a six volume series into one almost two hour movie. While some fun parts of the series were cut out to make way for solid plot progress the movie did not suffer from these cuts. Much of what made the comic made it into the movie (which includes the leveling system).
Michael Cera does a good job as Scott Pilgrim. While he plays a lot of nerdy roles, he does a good job balancing it out with other aspects of his personality. He acts out the serious parts well and does the same for when Scott is just being Scott and air-headed. Winstead plays a great Ramona. She manages to pull off quite a bit in the screen time she has to develop her character.
The story progresses a lot faster than it ever did in the books. It still touches on a lot of great things and in some ways offers a much more concise or hilarious take on events. A good example is skipping the Evny Adams vs. Ramona fight, but bringing over it in spirit when Scott is fighting against Roxy, one of Ramona's Evil Exes. Also, Sex Bob-Omb might have become better in the movie, but that is hard to say from what one could imagine from reading the books.
The movie, like the book is ripe with game references. The Legend of Zelda theme (the one from A Link to the Past specifically) comes up a good bit. Envy's band kept its name, which is a reference to an old side scroller on the NES of the same name. Scott does bust out with the Final Fantasy Battle Bass Line too, which just makes it better. Also, right in the beginning of the movie, having the Universal logo and music done in the 8-bit style. It was a wonderful sight to behold.
This is a fun movie to go see for a good number of reasons. It does help to have read the books, but even without them, it is still enjoyable. There is obviously some things that you can get if you know older style video games as well, but thankfully, there is no degree of high dependence on these references. Still, it is something to see with friends and it is not a bad date movie either (as it is a romance theme at its core). Good tunes and humorous situations make it a fun movie overall.
