Guild Wars 2 – Mockery of Death
“Discuss your Dream with Caithe and your cycle leader.”
Objective: “Speak with Caithe.”
Head back to the Astorea Waypoint and turn to the South. Follow this path forward to find the way to the grove. Just head South from there and straight on to reach the Grove itself. Once there go to the first elevator and take it down to the lower level. A little ways away you will find the entrance to the instance itself.
Once it has started head North then West to find Caithe. Approach and the conversation will begin.
Caithe: I knew we'd meet again, you Valiant.
Hero: You know that because you saw it in the Dream. What else do we dream that becomes true?
Caithe: Much. But not always what you might expect. Why? Is something troubling you?
Hero: Somewhat. In my dream, a champion in brillant green armor defeated all challengers. He seemed invincible, yet a small mouse nipped at at his heel.
Caithe: “Cycle leader”, you were born of “cycle”, like this Valiant. Can you interpet the vision? I see both literal and symbolic images here.
Cycle Leader: I'll try. When you saw this champion, did you feel frightened? Angry? Did -
Dagdar: Help! Somebody help me! That brute is killing my beloved. Stop him.
Hero: What? Where? Show me!
Caithe: The trouble's this way, Valiant. This brute could be the foe you seek. Hurry!
Follow Caithe to reach the Dreamer's Terrace. Here you will find Bercilak standing over the defeated Eladus.
Dagdar: Please! Enough. Victory is yours. Just let him live!
Bercilak: Live? Ha! This sapling accepted my challenge and failed. His life is forfeit.
Eladus: please Dagdar. Go, leave me. He'll kill you too, if you stay.
Dagdar: You're a monster, Bercilak. I won't let you do this! I won't live without my beloved!
Bercilak: So be it. As Ventari teaches, “hard ground makes stronger roots.”
The hero can step into the fight now and take on Bercilak. The two have a quick dialogue:
Hero: a knight in full armor – attacking defenseless innocents? That isn't right. Why don't you fight me instead?
Bercilak: I'd love to. I've killed many in my quest to find the exceptional individual who can defeat me. (Chuckle) I doubt you're it, but we'll fight anyway.
He will bow to you then the fight begins. Keep on the move or have your best armor here. It helps to take some extra time to be well over the level suggested for this quest so you have a better variety of skills. He will charge and swing his sword at you a lot. Still, after a while he will go down.
The crowd cheers to see Bercilak fall. Dagdar will cry “You did it, Valiant! You killed him!” The problem is that he will not stay down. He will rise and come at you again with full health. He will rise and say “Don't be so sure.” You must fight him in full again. Just keep the same tactics as before.
Things do not get any better when you have taken him down for the second time. Caithe will tell you, “Be cautious. I have a bad feeling about this ...” Bercilak will rise for a third time. Just keep fighting him. Just before he goes down yet again he will cast a massive spell that will daze and immobilize your character.
Bercilak: A Valiant? Ha! Good try, but you're no match for me, weed. You did well enough that I'll leave you alive – for now. But I'll be back. Next time try to make it a real challenge... or I'll make sure to finish what I started here today.
When the spell wears off it is time to talk with Caithe and Dagdar to finish out the quest.
Dagdar: My deepest thanks. Eladus is everything to me. Your courage saved us both.
Hero: Who was that knight in the green armor? I saw him in my Dream before I awoke. I recognized him as easily as if we had met before.
Dagdar: Bercilak. He's terrible! He challenges young Sylvari to duels then fights them to the death. When Bercilak insulted my honor, Eladus had no other option. He loves me, after all.
Hero: That sounds like a cat taking advantage of mice. He is prideful, and he is a bully. He deserves to be taught a lesson full of bruises.
Caithe: That's it! The meaning of your Dream. Like mice, young Sylvari fight Bercilak with no hope of winning. But you are different Valiant. You can do more than just throw yourself on his claws.
Dagdar: Perhaps I can help you, after all! Bercilak is wooing a Valiant named Gairwen – unsuccessfully, I might add. She's been seen near Morgan's Spiral.
Hero: That's helpful Dagdar. Thank you. I'll visit Gairwen and ask for her story. Perhaps Bercilak told her a weakness I can use.
