Neon Genesis Evangelion: REdeath

To conclude the night at Fanime, we took in one of the classic films of Fanime, REdeath. This Fan made parody of the popular Neon Genesis Evangelion (or simply Eva) TV series spoofs much of the series and reduces it down to one hour of solid entertainment.  One does not need to see Eva to be able to appreciate everything in REdeath, but it does help as it will explain some of the choices around the characters in their voices.

REdeath is a lot like seeing the Rocky Horror Picture Show at Midnight with a live troupe performing. You have a number of things to do and say and are more than welcome to make up something to just shout out during the show. The easiest example of this would be anytime you hear, “Hey everybody, it’s Gendou”, most will start clapping in time with Gendou’s theme and little montage. The only other really set part is some mandated Metal head banging during Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. Aside from just a few set parts like those mentioned, there really is not set dialogue the whole audience will use. It is quite appropriate for anyone, in a feminine voice, to call out to marry Gendou or to have his babies.

The story in REdeath is completely different from what is presented in Eva. Opposed to the actual events in the story, the Second Impact, a large scale global disaster, is caused by Gendou playing Prince’s song “1999” in the year 2000. Time fast forwards 15 years from that event, having Shinji come over to Tokyo to visit and work for his father at NERV (that’s right, it’s NERV or nothing). After some talking and explanation, Shinji is on a quest to “get some” and learn all about melons. Skipping over some great battle sequences and just silly shinanigins, the film ends with Shinji finally getting some.

This is one show that one should attend anytime they can. It offers up something different, much more akin to one the Abridged Series that are out there for numerous popular anime series. With a run time of about an hour, it offered a great close to a wonderful day at Fanime.
