Capcom Wondercon 2010

The Capcom panel at Wondercon 2010 opened with Robert Heqak introducing Final Fight Double Impact. He talked to us about how this game came out in 1980's, as well as the side-scroller Magic Sword which came out in the 1990's. The idea Capcom was presenting for this was to give the players a “classic and pure” experience. There will still be new content to be found inside the game. The biggest difference they are offering up though can be found in the multiplayer. With the web and networks like Xbox Live and Playstation Network, it makes it possible to drop in and out of games instantly. They were saying this is possible through GGPO. They talked about how they kept the original soundtrack but also offered a remixed by the same people who did Bionic Commando Rearmed. They offered up quite a few visual options as well for the game. It can support HD now as well as offering a few visual modes. The main example they cited was offering a mode that would turn your HD TV, Monitor or TV into something that would replicate the edging of the arcade cabinets of years long past. Another thing you will deal with would be the Vault. This contains both concept art and fan art for both series. The art that one would find on the cover is actually the winner of a contest. They had a line drawing done by an Udon artist and then made a contest for coloring it in.

One of the technologies they were highlighting was GGPO, in this case, they were talking about the networking potential of it. The big thing with GGPO, in regards to Final Fight Double Impact was being able to join a game instantly without the need to go through a lobby. It wold make it very simple just to find someone to play with when one wanted to do so.

The next game that they talked about was actually a collection of 4 games on the Gameboy Advance. The Megaman Zero Collection. Mike Shilp, the product manager for the game, explained that the game would be out in June 2010. All 4 games will be on just one DS cart. Of course the game is offering dual screen support. One interesting feature they were offering in the game was the chance to play the games in their chronological order. This game did not get too much time.

Mike stayed up a while longer and began to talk about the next game, Monster Hunter Tri. Again, it was only for a short while. He told us that Monster Hunter was a very popular in Japan but it was a paid service. Here in the US they are offering it free of charge. The game has new maps inside as well as a new controller that got bundled with the game. The game also, apparently, let's you either dive in or play the single player to take some time to learn the game and its controls. Of course he mentioned the promotions that GameStop is having if you preorder the title.

After that, Mike cleared off the stage and Ryan McDoogle took over to tell the assembled about Lost Planet 2. The game centers on its 4 player Co-op experience. As you play, he said, you will find yourself dependent on your team to survival. The game itself has 6 chapters in a massive world. At present, in that world, there is a massive war over the resources. Unfortunately, your squad sees the true enemy before anyone else and need to convince the various warring factions that they must band together and stop this threat. He also talked about how you will get upgrades that will allow you to customize your character and your mech. The big piece of technology that Ryan talked about was the GMT framework. This little piece of technology allows them to animate the world itself and increase the intelligence of the monsters.

Jeff Killian took the stage to tell us about the next few games. The first one he told us about was a big surprise, an iPod Touch version of Street Fighter 4. It manages to fit the game into a small media and there was very minimal loss between the two versions. Immediately you have access to 8 characters. The game also offered a few different modes of play.

The next game brought Mike Shilp back out to talked about was Dead Rising 2. After having a laugh at going from Mega Man to Dead Rising, he told us about how they took what made the first game great and how they managed to improve it. The sense of things you could use as a weapon improved greatly. This meant there would be more weapons and, of course, more zombies. Shilp also told us a little about the fact you can combine weapons this time to make unique things to hack down zombies with. He concluded telling us a little about the multiplayer, “Terror vs. Reality”. It offers a series of games in the context of a TV show that people watch.

Capcom concluded their panel talking about Super Street Fighter 4. The first thing they talked about was how they gad completed the roster of Street Fighter 2 characters and added a few from Street Fighter 3 and the Alpha series. In all, 10 new characters have been added to the game. They are also all available from the start. It was also announced that we would be able to play the Boat and Barrel bonus stages once again. They also added a lobby feature, complete with Quarter Matches. While this is a throwback to the old arcade days, fopr long time players it is a little piece of nostalgia. The system is simple, a person puts their quarter on the machine, to mark their place in the line. The winner stays at the machine and the loser heads to the back of line. In addition to the lobbies, they also added in Team Battle, where you can work with up to 4 people for a massive match, and a Replay channel. The Replay channel gives you the chance to record any match you participate in and watch it back again or share it with friends. He was also clear to tell us that the entire roster had been rebalanced in addition to their new combos.

In the end, the panel offered some good insights into what Capcom was offering up this year. They did include many of the games that people are eagerly looking forward to. The announcements of Mega Man 10, which was a complete side note along with them talking about Mega Man Z Collection which did not seem the most important game as it feels very niche. Still, getting some news on Dead Rising 2 and Super Street Fighter 4.
