After your mother gives you the running shoes, leave the house and head north over to route 201. Feel free to explore Twinleaf town a bit before heading out. Enter the houses, talk to people.

Over at route 201 you will meet your rival who will be teasing you as usual for being slow. He will tell you that he is going to see Prof' Rown to thank him for the pokemon. He will also tell you about a legendary pokemon that leaves at the lake and suggest you two catch it to impress Prof' Rowan.

Head west towards lake verity. Your rival will be following you. When you reach the far left, you will notice a blue sign to the north. Read it, see what it says. These signs are spread throughout Sinnoh and will help you with information and directions. This specific sign tells you that you are approaching Lake Verity.

Enter the lake. You will see a mysterous figure standing there and contemplating. Who is he? As you listen to what he is saying, you learn that his name is Cyrus. He then leaves the lake and your rival suggests that you now go to catch the legendary pokemon.

Suddenly you hear a cry, and your rival tells you its the legendary pokemon. However, you realize that you are not carrying any pokeballs on you! Pokeballs are required to catch pokemon. More on this in later walkthroughs.

Your rival suggests that you had over to Sandgem town to find Prof' Rowan and ask him for some pokeballs. He will then challenge you to a race and leave for Sandgem town.

Before chasing him out, explore the lake a bit. Feel like having another pokemon battle? Wander around in the tall grass patches and eventually you will find some wild pokemon to battle! This will give experience to your starter pokemon so that he gains levels and becomes more powerful.

Different areas have different wild pokemon in them. In Lake Verity, for example, you will find Starly and Bidoof. Note their battlecry, each pokemon has its unique battlecry which it sounds at the beginning of the battle. Fight a couple of battles until your starter has reached level 7, then head out of the lake. Before beginning your journey to Sandgem town, stop by your house and talk to your mother. She will have you rest, and your pokemon will be healed of any damage. You can go to your house at any time to get your pokemon completely healed.
