Once in a while, Video Game companies or Video Game retailers decide to do a Midnight Release. Hardly a foreign concept to anyone, it does merit at least a little attention. Throughout my tenure as a Gamer, I’ve attended a few Midnight Releases, both to see what they’re like and specifically for the game. Much like any other Midnight release, the crowd will be made up of people who are fans of the game. Sometimes people will dress up for these events, much like at a Con or a movie opening at midnight. Guaranteed though is that you’ll be able to talk to anyone there about the game and learn something new, from tricks to locations to pull off a variety of tricks. Even if no one is dressed up, expect some antics. While this doesn’t mean someone running around naked, it does usually mean someone or some group doing something that will relate to the game. A good example is one of the events I attended, World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, after getting the game, as I was leaving the mall, I jumped from the top of the flight of stairs and shouted “I am Forsaken” (I’ve got a level 62 Frost Mage to back that up too). These happenings, I assure you, are normal. Like mentioned earlier, people attending these events love the game. This means being able to revel in the anticipation for the game with a crowd of like-minded people. Take advantage of this.

Midnight releases do have a slight bit of protocol, like any other situation, that one should mind.

First would be to check the location and be sure that the site is in fact hosting the event. Also to be considered first is: don’t harass someone who plays the opposite side of your MMORPG; those rivalries are always to be resolved IN GAME (you can take ‘em better that way anyhow).

Second is come prepared. It’s the middle of the night, seriously, dress warm/comfortably. Snacks are always a good idea and the same goes for drinks. This can make you new friends sharing or new enemies for mocking people.

Third: If it applies, take the time to reserve the game. Some people can show up at the midnight release and honestly get the game without a reservation. I only mention it because most store’s stock is based on the number of reservations. It also ensures that your wait outside was not in vain. There is nothing worse than waiting for a few hours in the cold, at night then finding out they’re out.

Fourth and Last: No Cutting in line. No one likes this, it won’t make you any friends and it might just get you kicked out.

Just keep these few things in mind and you’re set to enjoy your Midnight Release Party!
